Reviews in Journals

a solidly produced book...clearly an outcome of a great deal of work and experience...much of interest in the book that could give food for thought in other countries ...records much wisdom drawn from experience ...a reference source for experienced foresters" (P J Wood in The International Forestry Review, Oxford, [1(3),1999, p. 199])

"The book deserves to be a standard text for many years to come in any situation dealing with afforestation, including urban forestry. Forestry and Parks Departments everywhere would also greatly benefit from the section on management and organisational techniques. If increased international funding is forthcoming for tree planting to combat global warming then this manual will be even more essential and its author, P R Siyag will have rendered humanity a great service."

(Richard Webb in Arboricultural Journal, Oxford, Vol 25 No. 1 April 2001. p.93-94)

"Each theme is dealt with at every level of detail. The book is very well written and easy to follow. I would recommend The Afforestation Manual as a reference for personal use by the practitioner of afforestation and reforestation of dry or semiarid regions of the world.
(Dr Florencia Montagnini, Professor, Yale University, in Journal of Sustainable Forestry 17(4): 100-101)
Although the manual does not include similar work in other tropical areas of the world, it could be useful in areas with similar droughty environments. ... The manual is the result of nine years of experience by the author. Unlike some texts that concentrate on mainly the biology, this publication covers both technical and managerial aspects of afforestation.
(David South, Professor, Auburn University, in New Forests 25: 161–162, 2003.)

"The Afforestation Manual: Technology & Management is probably the only one of its kind among Indian publications as it combines both forest technology and management in one publication. The book is useful for both non-specialists and specialists working with voluntary organisations, government departments as well as consultants."
(K C Chacko in The Evergreen, Kerala Forestry Research Institute, [No. 42, March 1999, p12])

"A lucid running account of the technology of afforestation and tree planting. The book has been conceived, designed, and written by a highly qualified author having nine years' practical experience in afforestation. The multidisciplinary background of the author... has led to a systems approach that is at once unique and invigorating"
(Desertification Control Bulletin, UNEP, Nairobi [Number 35, 1999, p.80])

" It provides a wide range of structured information and a number of model designs which can be gainfully put to use by the field supervisors and field managers. The book is invaluable for anyone concerned with the practice of afforestation and tree planting, be he a tree hobbyist or a school teacher, a professional forester or a senior policy maker in government, an industrialist, an environmental activist or a member of a community service organisation."

(Bois et Forests des Tropiques, Montpellier, Cedex France [No. 262, 4/1999, p. 79])

The book is comprehensive not only detailing the practices but covering the gamut of organisational-institutional-managerial frameworks necessary to undertake afforestation programs...the volume contains a mine of information...the emphasis the author places on public participation resonates with much that is applicable to the present public involvement at the forest level in Canada...The author writes clearly and effectively and reflects a shift from an isolationist or elitist approach to a more participatory one.

(Dr V J Nordin in The Forestry Chronicle, Canadian Institute of Forestry, [May-June/2000])

Although the content originates from India, this book has a considerable amount of information needed for anyone who is endeavouring to establish an afforestation project within an arid or semi-arid region... The inclusion of CPM, MIS and quality control is valuable.... The vast amount of technical detail will definitely be of value to operational planners.

(J H Louw in South African Forestry Journal, Number 185 July 1999, p.72)

This path breaking work is a manual of practice for execution of afforestation and tree planting programmes in arid and semiarid tropics...The manual is a boon to the field level supervisors... the planners and policy makers... students and teachers of forestry... social workers and charity organisations interested in the global task of greening the planet.

(Journal of Indian Association for Environmental Management, NEERIE, Nagpur, India Volume 26 No. 2 p.138])

"the book effectively addresses all the pertinent issues of afforestation, thereby bridging the gap, both between theory and practice, and the technological and managerial issues of afforestation. It can also be used as a basic text for afforestation, on account of the detailed elucidation given for each of the topics covered."

(Green Business Opportunities, Confederation of Indian Industries, New Delhi, India, No.7/4, p.30)

One of the continual struggles working for the Peace Corps Forestry Extension Program was the lackof reference material available. After jumping hurdles of language barriers, chauvinism, inexperience and cultural ignorance, a volunteer still had difficulty advising farmers on establishing and caring for tree plantations. ....PR Siyag has taken on the noble and necessary task of presenting both technical aspects of an afforestation project.  e.g. dealing with sloping ground, nursery establishment, fencing, irrigation, etc, and the managerial structure, e.g. organizational framework, quality control, people’s participation...

(Joel Benson in IN PRACTICE: The Journal of Holistic Management, Albuquerque, NM 87102)

Personal Comments

"A highly useful book, very well documented with essential charts and tables. A must for any organisation connected with plantation work in any category. Congratulations on bringing out such a good work with aesthetic presentation."
(G K Prasad, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Manipur, India)

"This idea in itself is so precious, in fact priceless. So also certainly is the entire conceptualisation of this project…first of its kind. It is wide ranging, almost all-inclusive, and so very systematically arranged in an impressive order."

(Gopal Bhardwaj, Professor, JNV University, Jodhpur)
